Staying positive and hopeful while trying to conceive a baby

July 22nd, 2009

In the past few weeks my hope has disappeared. My focus on the positive has evaporated and my belief that surely we will succeed and get pregnant has become a myth that I keep trying to force myself to believe in.

I believe that focusing on trying to conceive has something to do with it. The constant disappointment makes it difficult to maintain a positive hopeful outlook. It also forces you to acknowledge that negative things happen over which you have no control. It forces you to face the fact that you might not succeed in your quest. But the fact is that you might succeed. There is no knowing.

I miss enjoying my life and focusing on all the wonderful things that I do have. I dislike focusing and constantly thinking about all the things that I do not have. And that is what trying to conceive does to you – it focuses you on the fact that you do not have a positive Home Pregnancy Test. And that you do not have a baby. And that you do not have a pregnancy. And, finally, that you do not have success. It focuses you on what you do NOT have.

If you are going to continue that journey to motherhood then you must focus on what you DO have. Each time you get your period, you need to focus on the fact that you are menstruating and not menopausal. Each time you ovulate you have to focus on the fact that you can ovulate and that you do still have eggs. Each time you try a new technique or supplement or treatment and it does not work, then you focus on the fact that you have crossed out one more thing that is not helping you toward your goal of having a baby, so that you can move on to others treatments. Whittling down the possible things that might be contributing to your lack of success is a step towards success.

Success is a process not an event.

Each month brings you a step closer to success. This is particularly true if you are taking supplements or herbs or having acupuncture. All these treatments are cumulative so each month you have another month’s worth of possibly successful therapy in your system, increasing your odds of conception. Another months’ worth of bringing your body that much closer towards its healthiest most conception-conducive state.

Staying positive through this journey toward motherhood has everything to do with your focus and where you choose place it. It is not an easy choice and sometimes it does not even seem like a choice. But a choice it is. And whenever by default we slip into the negative focus, we must force ourselves back into the positive one. We must keep asking ourselves “What do you choose to focus on?”

An aggressive acupuncture session to help us conceive our baby

July 15th, 2009

So today I had my first acupuncture session for this cycle. My acupunturist decided that she is going to be very aggressive this month. She needled the points in the back for the first time – these points are specificially geared towards increasing blood flow to the reproductive system. She also did a whole slew of other points in addition to the regular ones.

I really enjoy my acupuncture. I always feel so much calmer and more positive after my appointment. And the time literally flies by. 40 minutes seems to pass in the wink of an eye. And the best part about it was that she had some good news to share – another of her clients whom she has also been treating for infertility has had success! It really heartens me to know that soon she will be telling that story about me to her other clients! I always feel assured of success after my acupuncture appointment. The time for me to become pregnant is now.
